WRITEOUT* AND DAILY CREATE

Today’s WriteOut* includes this Daily Create prompt for the above photo:

This bronze statue — entitled “Starlight” by Andrew DeVries —  is part of the DeVries Sculpture Trail in Western Massachusetts, USA, and is located, along with a selection of others, next to a river. She’s caught in dance and joy under trees, near a river. For today’s prompt, write a poem or piece of prose about her and perhaps, what she is dancing to.

Daily Create Prompt

I have seen this dance in the woods by one of my granddaughters who often wanders off by herself to sing and twirl in a world of her own, thankful for her God’s creation in which she feels blessed. And her dance and song are always full of grace, beautiful to enjoy.

And so, the poem… in which I added the fairies.

Poetry

Afternoon Dance

When afternoon sunlight
lingers through the fledgling woods,
sparkles on the rushing waters,
reminds hikers to return home,
she tiptoes along the path
to dance with the spirits
of sun’s last rays,
river’s whispers,
and her shadow’s grace
until the moonlight
calls the fairies
to dance her home.

This post is part of the October WRITEOUT adventure, October 8 through the 22nd, partnership of the National Writing Project and the National Park Service — a choice to enjoy the outdoors with poetry, prose, and parks for Write Out 2023. Organized as a public invitation to get out and create, supported by a series of free online activities, Write Out invites educators, students, and families to explore national parks and other public spaces. The goal is to connect and learn through place-based writing and sharing.  Check out this infographic for the flow of the two weeks.
